A scientific inquiry linked to a procedural writing unit in our English class. Students decided which drink to make and by trial and error, students modified the ratio and proportion of the ingredients to come up with a reasonably good tasting lemonade. Procedural writing followed after the activity.

Previous to the lemonade making activity, How to Make a Cinnamon Roll was used to model the task and scaffold their learning. Once the learning intentions were understood and success criteria explained, students proceeded to the lemonade making activity with very limited help from the teacher. Students were encouraged to perform the experiment independently yet collaboratively with each other.

This Communities of Thinking is a scientific inquiry on "Who's afraid of the BIG BAD Wolf?" It started with exploring the different bad wolves which could affect our homes - water, fire, wind, earth. With guidance from teachers, students performed experiments using the Predict-Experiment-Observe-Analyse-Evaluate and constructed biodegradable houses tested against the different wolves as a culminating task. A final scientific report was completed by the students and put in their portfolio.
